Day 4

Subject: Who are you marketing to, [firstname]?

Hi [firstname],

Once you've defined what you want to achieve from your content marketing (like we discussed yesterday), you next need to define your target audience.

Who is your ideal customer?

It's best to have a specific type of person in mind when you're creating your content as opposed to trying to target the entire planet.

Create a persona for them – be really detailed. I mean REALLY detailed.

Are they male or female? Where do they live – what city/state/country? Do they live in a house, apartment or condo? Is that in the inner city, suburbs, small town or country? What do they do for a living? What qualifications do they have? How much do they earn? What car do they drive? What newspapers or magazines do they read? Where do they shop for clothing? What kind of restaurants do they like to eat in? Are they single? Married? Divorced? Widowed? Do they have any kids? If so how old are they? Where do they take their vacations and how often do they go? Give them a name.

When you create your content, pretend you're writing directly to this person.
OK, so this person won't be a real person, but the person you have in mind will shape the kind of content you create.

For example, if your ideal customer is a doctor, you'll need to use longer words and more complicated sentence structures in your written content than you would use if your target audience consisted of people who didn't finish high school.

Likewise if your audience is in the US, you'll want to write in American English, but if your ideal customer lives in the UK or Australia, you'll need to write in British English.

You get the idea.

You want your prospect to think you had THEM in mind when they read or watch your content, and you want them to think of you as “one of us”.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
